So, I got my hands on some old seats from the Red Line trains in Boston. These stainless steel seats have been on the Red Line trains for decades. They are incredibly well made, and over the next year while the trains are replaced, the plan is to make more chairs.
I designed these chairs to be an easy and fun intro to wood working class. Honored and excited to be working with these peaces of Boston history.
Before launching into a real furniture project, I. had some fun with the seats.
How fun is it to ride the Red Line swing?
Also bolted one to my bike just for fun.
The office chair version uses the seat brackets from the train and a set of caster wheels. (Yes, I know my desk is a mess.)
At first the MBTA folks were reluctant to give me the old seats. So I made a custom shirt to try and convince them. It worked!
