Song
- Fields Words
By the time I met Pete Hyde, it was the morning after Sadie had stopped by to look at the apartment. “You’ll have to really hate this place in order to convince Sadie not to move in.” He said to me. While he toured me around the property and showed me how to identify which barn beams were the oldest, I assured him that I couldn’t be further from hating the place.
Every day since, the love that Sadie and I have for this place, as well as for Pete and Julie has grown. Pete died last year after a series of health issues. Soon after his passing, I was writing in my journal and part of what I wrote sounded a lot like the chorus to a song. Sadie helped me write some verses, and we recorded a song with help from my dear friend Miles Stenhouse and cousin Ethan Pakchar. As someone with no background in music, it’s been truly amazing to see the project come together.
The first verse is about our friend and landlord, Pete Hyde, second is about my paternal grandmother Leah Unger, third is for my maternal grandfather Keith Ketner, and fourth is for my dear friend Chris Cavey with whom I shared a home in India for a time.
I’d like to invite anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one, to write a verse about them and about their home. I would love to hear what you come up with.
If you know someone who has lost a friend of family member recently, consider asking them to tell you a story about what made their loved one special. Perhaps you’ll be surprised by what you learn.
Rhythm guitar, backup vocals, recording and editing by Miles Stenhouse. Lead guitar by Ethan Pakchar. Lyrics by Sadie Woolf, Coby Unger, Miles Stenhouse and Ethan Pakchar. Lead vocals by Coby Unger.
